Chimney Rock Trail: Wildflowers, Whale Watching, and Elephant Seal Views

At the eastern headlands of Point Reyes National Seashore, Chimney Rock Trail is a short coastal ridge walk renowned for spring wildflowers, gray whale migrations (March to May peaks), and elephant seal haul-outs (winter). This easy trail offers dramatic ocean views and historic lifeboat station remnants.

A Coastal Bluff and Marine Mosaic

Chimney Rock blends narrow ridge trails, rocky cliffs, and Drakes Bay overlooks with wildflower carpets (Douglas iris, poppies, lupines, checkerbloom) and marine life. Elephant seals gather below (hundreds December–March); gray whales pass close; birds and raptors soar.

Adventure With a Conservation Conscience

1.75-mile round-trip trail from parking lot along ridge crest; overlooks for seals/whales (binoculars ideal). No beach access; stay on trail.

Access is managed: free parking (limited), sunrise to sunset, pack out waste. Seasonal protections (e.g., elephant seal zones); no pets; fog/wind common.

Chimney Rock Trail offers Point Reyes wildflowers and whale watching in coastal splendor. For observers seeking blooms and marine spectacles, the ridge repays early timing; a headlands highlight.
