Baltimore Canyon Preserve: Waterfalls, Ferns, and Shaded Canyon Hiking

In southern Marin County near Larkspur/Kentfield, Baltimore Canyon Open Space Preserve (193 acres, Marin County Parks-managed) encloses a secluded canyon with cascading waterfalls and lush fern-filled trails. This quiet preserve offers magical woodland hikes, especially when Dawn Falls flows strong after rains.

A Riparian and Chaparral Canyon Oasis

Baltimore Canyon blends diverse woodlands (Douglas fir, maples, madrones), chaparral slopes, and Larkspur Creek's riparian zone with mossy trees, ferns, and seasonal cascades (30-foot Dawn Falls plus smaller drops). The shaded, green landscape supports birds, amphibians, and wildflowers in a mystical setting.

Adventure With a Conservation Conscience

Dawn Falls Trail (moderate, loops 6+ miles with 600 ft gain) leads to the falls via footbridge; Hoo-Koo-E-Koo Trail adds variety. Flat lower sections suit families; upper trails more rugged.

Access is intentional: free staging (Friday to Monday 8 a.m. to sunset, pedestrian daily), pack out waste, stay on trails. Summer heat closures possible; no dogs in sensitive zones; caution on wet/slippery paths.

Baltimore Canyon Preserve offers Marin waterfalls and ferns hiking in shaded seclusion. For explorers seeking cascading beauty and ferny magic, the canyon descent repays the effort; a lush, hidden refuge.
