Kwaay Paay Peak: Steep Panoramic Hike in Mission Trails Regional Park

In the northern reaches of Mission Trails Regional Park near Santee, Kwaay Paay Peak (1,194 feet) offers a short but intensely steep ascent with commanding views over San Diego's eastern canyons and beyond. This challenging summit trail provides a quick heart-pumping workout with rewarding overlooks in a less-crowded corner of the park.

A Blend of Chaparral Ridges and Canyon Overlooks

Kwaay Paay bridges rugged chaparral, mixed scrub, and rocky outcrops, supporting diverse wildlife like raptors soaring overhead, lizards on sun-warmed boulders, and seasonal blooms. The peak's northern exposure offers panoramic glimpses of Fortuna Mountain, Cowles, and the park's vast canyons, blending urban-edge habitat with wild openness.

Adventure With a Conservation Conscience

The 2.3 to 2.5-mile out-and-back trail (hard, 875+ ft gain, no switchbacks) climbs directly from Father Junipero Serra Trailhead, merging routes for a rocky, direct push to the summit. Combine with Fortuna extensions for longer days.

Access is free: street parking at trailhead, dogs on leash, sunrise to sunset, pack out waste, stay on trail to protect fragile slopes. Steep/exposed sections demand caution; little shade.

Kwaay Paay Peak offers San Diego steep panoramic hiking in Mission Trails seclusion. For those craving quick intensity and sweeping vistas, the direct ascent rewards strong legs; a compact peak with big payoff.
