Soquel Demonstration State Forest: Redwood Singletrack and Technical Mountain Biking

Hidden in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Soquel, Soquel Demonstration State Forest (SDSF, or "Demo") spans 2,681 acres of working redwood forest managed by CAL FIRE. This rugged, multi-use destination is world-famous among Bay Area mountain bikers for its challenging trails, while offering hikers and equestrians immersive forest experiences.

A Dense Redwood and Mixed Forest Haven

The forest features second-growth coast redwoods, mixed conifers, oaks, and understory ferns along steep canyons and ridges. Trails wind through shaded groves where banana slugs thrive, deer browse, and birds call from the canopy. As a demonstration forest, it balances active management (sustainable timber, fire resilience) with recreation, supporting biodiversity in a recovering post-logging landscape.

Adventure With a Conservation Conscience

Over 30+ miles of trails cater to intermediate/advanced users: the iconic 4-mile Flow Trail (recently resurfaced for better flow) delivers smooth, fun descents through redwoods; Braille Trail offers technical challenges; and long fire roads provide climbs. Hiking and equestrian use share paths, with Sawpit Trail adding rugged singletrack.

Rules are strict for protection: no e-bikes or motorized vehicles, bikes prohibited when trails are wet/saturated, stay on designated paths, pack out waste, and bring water (no sources). Advanced terrain demands skill and caution.

Soquel Demonstration State Forest rewards Santa Cruz mountain biking enthusiasts and redwood hikers seeking flow and challenge. The technical descents and deep forest shade repay respect for the land; a true demo of wild endurance.
