Sierra National Forest (Mariposa Section): Mountain Backcountry and Sierra Wilderness

In the southern Sierra Nevada near Mariposa, the Mariposa section of Sierra National Forest encompasses rugged mountain backcountry with granite ridges, alpine lakes, and forested trails. This vast forest area offers remote hiking, dispersed camping, and high-country solitude; a gateway to the Ansel Adams Wilderness and beyond.

A Mountain Backcountry and Granite Mosaic

The Mariposa section blends high-elevation granite peaks, subalpine meadows, mixed conifer forests, and glacial lakes. Wildlife includes black bears, mule deer, marmots, golden eagles, and seasonal wildflowers; recovering post-fire areas (e.g., Garnet Fire 2025) support diverse habitats with ongoing restoration.

Adventure With a Conservation Conscience

Trails like South Fork (restoration ongoing), Chilnualna or longer backcountry routes; dispersed camping with permits.

Access is intentional: free entry (some fees for developed sites), pack out waste, bear canisters mandatory in wilderness. Pile burning ongoing; check FS for road/trail conditions (high-clearance often needed); no major closures in Mariposa section.

Sierra National Forest (Mariposa section) delivers mountain backcountry hiking in Sierra wildness. For adventurers seeking granite ridges and alpine solitude, the trails reward preparation; a vast Sierra sanctuary.
