Ma-le'l Dunes: Coastal Sand Dunes and Trail Immersion

Near Arcata on Humboldt Bay, Ma-le'l Dunes (Ma-le'l Cooperative Management Area, BLM/USFWS) preserves 110 acres of coastal dunes, wetlands, and forest with boardwalk trails. This protected area offers dune exploration and birdwatching; a serene Humboldt coastal gem.

A Coastal Dune and Wetland Mosaic

Ma-le'l blends shifting sand dunes, dune scrub, wetlands, and forested edges. Rare plants (e.g., beach layia) and migratory birds thrive; wetlands support amphibians and invertebrates; the area exemplifies dune restoration and biodiversity.

Adventure With a Conservation Conscience

Boardwalk trails (easy, 1 to 2 miles) through dunes and wetlands; bird blinds.

Access is intentional: free parking, sunrise to sunset, pack out waste, stay on boardwalks. No pets; respect fragile dunes.

Ma-le'l Dunes delivers coastal sand dunes hiking in Humboldt beauty. For those seeking dune ecosystems and quiet trails, the boardwalks repay gentle steps to a restored coastal sanctuary.
