Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park: Roosevelt Elk and Old-Growth Redwoods

In Redwood National and State Parks near Orick, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park protects dense old-growth coast redwoods, fern canyons, and open prairies where Roosevelt elk roam freely. This park blends towering groves with coastal meadows; a wildlife-rich sanctuary along the Redwood Highway.

A Mosaic of Old-Growth Forest, Prairie, and Elk Habitat

Prairie Creek transitions from ancient redwood groves (some 300+ feet tall) to fern-filled ravines, coastal prairies, and the Gold Bluffs Beach area. Roosevelt elk herds (hundreds) graze meadows; black bears, banana slugs, varied birds, and seasonal rhododendrons thrive in the moist, diverse ecosystem.

Adventure With a Conservation Conscience

Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway (10 miles through old-growth) with elk viewing; Fern Canyon Trail (1-mile loop, permit required seasonally) for lush ferns; James Irvine Trail for solitude.

Access is intentional: free entry, sunrise to sunset, pack out waste, stay on trails. Elk viewing from vehicle or designated areas; no pets on trails; Fern Canyon permit (free, Recreation.gov) summer.

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park delivers Roosevelt elk and old-growth redwoods in wild beauty. For wildlife watchers and forest seekers, the groves repay quiet observation; a living redwood sanctuary.
