Walker River (East Fork): River Canyon Scenery and Resilient Tailwater

Flowing from Bridgeport Reservoir north toward Nevada in Mono County, the East Walker River (East Fork) carves a scenic canyon with diverse water types and renowned fly fishing. This resilient tailwater; famous for trophy brown trout; offers canyon views, pocket water, and a wild river feel in a narrow gorge.

A Canyon Tailwater and Riparian Mosaic

The East Fork blends fast runs, plunge pools, pocket water, and slow deep sections (e.g., Murphy's Pond) in a rugged canyon. The river supports healthy brown trout (many 20+ inches) and diverse birds; riparian zones host willows, cottonwoods, and seasonal wildlife amid high-desert influences.

Adventure With a Conservation Conscience

Fly fishing (license required, barbless/artificial lures in some zones) along Highway 182 parallels or dirt road access; wade or float sections. Canyon less crowded than Miracle Mile.

Access is open: roadside pullouts/parking along Hwy 182, sunrise to sunset, pack out waste. Respect private land; no major restrictions, but challenging wading in flows.

Walker River (East Fork) delivers Mono County river canyon scenery and tailwater fishing in rugged beauty. For anglers and explorers seeking resilient trout and gorge views, the canyon repays skill and patience; an Eastern Sierra classic.
